Definition: Underfloor heating warms rooms through pipes (wet systems) or electric mats in the floor, running at low temperatures that suit heat pumps especially well.
Wet vs electric
Wet systems (£80-£120/m² retrofit) connect to your boiler or heat pump and cost little to run. Electric mats (£50-£80/m²) are cheaper to fit but dearer to run — best for single bathrooms.
Heat pump pairing
Because it runs at 35-45°C rather than a radiator’s 60-70°C, underfloor heating lets a heat pump operate at its highest efficiency (COP).
