EV Chargers for Renters and Flat Owners: How the £500 Grant Works (2026)

Quick answer: since April 2026 the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant pays £500 per socket, and it’s aimed squarely at renters and flat owners with dedicated off-street parking. Owner-occupiers in houses are no longer eligible. With a typical 7kW installation at £800–£1,500, the grant covers a third or more of the cost.

• You own or lease an eligible electric vehicle (or have one on order)
• The installer is OZEV-approved and claims the grant on your behalf

The North West has one of the UK’s largest shares of rented terraces and flats — in towns like Salford, Liverpool and Bolton, a large slice of households qualify for exactly this grant. Landlords can also claim separate funding per property, so it’s worth raising with yours: a chargepoint adds rental appeal at little or no net cost.

How to claim, step by step

• 1. Get landlord/freeholder permission in writing (for the wall fixing and supply)
• 2. Choose an OZEV-approved installer and get a quote with the £500 already deducted
• 3. The installer applies for the grant — you never claim it yourself
• 4. Switch to an EV tariff once installed for 2–3p-per-mile overnight charging
