Definition: The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK scheme requiring large energy suppliers to pay households for surplus renewable electricity exported to the grid, typically 4p-15p per kWh.
How it works
Suppliers with 150,000+ customers must offer an SEG tariff. You need an MCS-certified install and a smart meter. Rates vary widely between suppliers — switching your SEG provider is free and can triple your export income.
What you earn
A typical 4kWp solar system exports 1,500-2,500 kWh a year. At 4p/kWh that’s £60-£100; at 15p/kWh it’s £225-£375. SEG replaced the closed Feed-in Tariff for new installations.
